(I posted this in the wrong location the first time. Sorry!)
The short of it, we had a devastating start to our week with two neighborhood dogs breaking into our backyard and killing our chickens. We had only one survivor and we didn’t know it until she came clucking back into our yard in the evening looking for a place to roost.

After weeping over our sweet birds, and filing a report with animal control (apparently this is the their dogs 4th incident devastating neighbors pets and livestock), we realized we had 8 eggs semi-recently laid as the girls had just finished molting. In a last ditch effort to perhaps hatch a chick from our beloved flock, we’ve borrowed a Nature Right from a friend and I’ve begun incubating the eggs in my classroom as a fun project for my 4th graders. I know it’s a long shot and the eggs aren’t all ideal, some are dirty or not quite the ideal shape, but I hope that we at least get one little chick.

I thought I’d share it here. I’m hopeful to get one little chick. All our birds were wonderful, our little Roo especially. I’d actually be thrilled beyond measure if we ended up with a roo that was a son of his. He had the best temperament. All of the eggs if they hatch would be half Orpington as our roo was a buff Orp.

We are on day two, here are the pictures of my eggs and our incubator. The friend I borrowed it from recommended a dry hatch, as we live in a very humid environment.

They all laid similar looking eggs, but the potential crosses are:
Buff Orp Roo x:

Silver Lace Wyandotte
Barred Rock
Speckled Sussex (we had 2 of these)
Rhode Island Red
Buff Orp
Golden Sex-Link

Here’s to hoping

Tomorrow will be Day 7, which will be our first candling. I thought I was a patient person, but it turns out I am not lol. All I want to do is take a peek! I am so hopeful that at least one or two will be developing. But we will have to wait until tomorrow.

I will be numbering the eggs tomorrow as we candle them, should I also use pencil to draw a line marking the air cell between candlings if I can see it? I read somewhere that it's a good idea, but I wasn't sure if it was really helpful if I'm only planning on candling tomorrow (day 7) and then once more on day 14 just to make sure things are developing, and disposing of any quitters so we don't end up with a rotten egg in the classroom. (My worst fear honestly.) This is my very first hatch, I've read and watched a lot of videos so I think I know what to look for tomorrow. I waited for day 7 since I am not very experienced, I read you can candle on day 4 to see if any are developing but I don't have as trained of an eye for it, so I wanted to give myself the best chance for spotting any infertile eggs or quitters. I am confident I'll know a clear egg as that's quite obvious, as well as being able to spot the dreaded "blood line" of an embryo that has died, but some of the embryos that quit become "cloudy" and I'm not as confident I'd be able to tell that from a healthy developing egg. Maybe I'll see if I can snap a picture of them and post them here for more experienced eyes. I wish I could tell all my eggs apart so I could know which hens they were from. I think I know that the two darker eggs are from my speckled Sussex hens and I'm really hoping those will hatch. My speckled Sussex girls were the sweetest birds I've ever had. Especially my little Pepper girl! Fingers crossed!

It's so hard waiting! I just set my eggs yesterday and I so badly want them to be far enough along to see something. I will probably weigh them on day 3 to see how they're progressing and make sure my humidity isn't too high or too low and I don't think I'll be able to resist candling while I'm at it!
Good luck, fingers crossed all your little eggies are developing!

I hope your eggs hatch! That is devastating about your flock being attacked. I lost two girls to a neighbor dog earlier this year and they were just barely too young to be laying. I wish so badly that I could have had some of their eggs to incubate as they were both so sweet and beautiful.

If you can have a second person with you when you candle the eggs, then you can focus on handling the eggs and they could snap a pic of each one being candled. I don’t like taking pics of candling when I’m alone because I’m so scared I will drop an egg if I am also juggling my phone. But I am clumsier than the average person.

For me, I usually don’t trace the air cell until I put them in lockdown (because then I know where to expect them to be pipping and can look for abnormalities.) But if you are concerned about humidity and whether they are losing too much or not enough water then you could trace them tomorrow and compare with the next candling. I would also number them tomorrow just so that you can keep track of each egg!

Excited for you!! Keep us posted!

I'M SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!

7 out of 8 eggs are confirmed embryos!!!
I must apologize that in my excitement, I wasn't able to snap a picture of each egg. My hands were shaking the whole time. But 7 out of 8 had that distinct little eyeball looking back at us through the shell! There is one, and I did get a picture, that I'm not very confident about; let me know what you think. It is number 3 and it is also the smallest egg. I will re candle that one on Friday which should be Day 10, and if I don't see any obvious signs of development I'd rather pull it just in case. I wouldn't want it bursting or harming the other eggs. I don't know how common it is, but with the way my luck has been prior to this I'd rather not take any chances!

I can try to re-candle the ones that I didn't get a good picture of, but I was kind of afraid to take them back out again. The only ones I didn't get a picture of were #1 (first one, I was too excited and forgot) and #7, which was deemed 'Lucky' by my students because we couldn't see the eye immediately, but after rolling it we did see it. I have a video of that one, which I can't upload here unless I post to YouTube first which I just don't want to bother with. Maybe I can re-candle #7 and #1 to snap a picture of it today, unless it's best to just leave them alone for now! I can always take a pictures on day 10 when I check on egg #3 again.

Here are the pictures!!! Let me know what you think!

#8!! Hello little chicken eye!!!! :love

These next two pics are #3, this is the egg in question. It looks cloudy to me and I can't see an eye, so it might be a quitter? It moves around when I twist it a little. I'll check again on day 10 (Friday), unless you guys think I should just pull it now.

#6 Very obvious eye, the kids saw it immediately!

#5, hard to see in the picture but the eye is to the bottom right, close to the air cell. This one was very obvious in person.

#4! Peek-a-boo!!!
