Hi everyone! I am looking for chicken resources in Las Vegas, NV. I am zoned for chickens (with my neighbors approval) and am currently researching the best breeds and coop for my family. I have small children so I want kid-friendly girls, of course they need to be heat tolerant and hopefully on the quiet side since I can't have any neighbor complaints. Also wondering if any Vegas back yard birders have any issues with snakes.

Thank you for your help, I am hoping to be approved and ready for chicks by the spring.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. I would recommend Black Australorps. I've raised them for years (along with dozens of other breeds) and they are incredibly hardy. I raised them where summer temperatures frequently reached 117-118 F (123 F once), and where temperatures dropped to 30 F below zero one winter, and in both climate extremes, they came through like troopers. They are also very calm and gentle birds. My children, and now my granddaughter, made lap pets of ours. And they are the best layers of the brown egg laying breeds. A Black Australorp holds the brown egg laying record with 364 eggs in 365 days, and while none of mine have ever reached that level of production (and likely never will), I've still had a few of them lay over 300 eggs in a year. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Whatever breed you decide to get, good luck with your flock.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

Buff orpingtons are my personal favorite. They are calm, very affectionate and cuddly, kid friendly and lay large brown eggs regularly. However they tend to be vocal; announcing their opinion! Also, they aren't the most heat tolerant breed.

I've never owned australorps but I know know they are also super docile and are excellent layers. They are more heat hardy and a little more quiet.

Other breeds to consider would include: Leghorns, barred rocks, Easter eggers, (EE) Sussex, silkies and faverlloes. Leghorns need to be tamed young as they are a skittish breed. But they are one of the best egg laying breeds and are very heat hardy. Barred rocks are heat and cold hardy, great layers, SUPER curious and friendly. EEs are heat hardy, curious and docile but tend to be. But more vocal. Sussex chickens are super vocal at least in my experience. But they are very curious and affectionate. Silkies are one of the best breeds to kids. They are just like little stuffed animals! They are my good layers though. Faverlloes are more known for being quieter. They are very friendly and affectionate birds. They can be a bit loud.

All these breeds will of course be more tame and docile if you raise them from chick hood and spend time cuddling them.

Kelsie has given you great links to check out.

Best of luck to you!:D

Silkies are usually great for kids and frequently go "broody" so you could slip fertilized eggs from any breed under them, and they would hatch and raise as their own.

Love Salmon Faverolles also - another docile breed probably would go well together - as more dominant breeds tend to pick on both of them and bully them.

Glad you joined us!

I would personally recommend the Wyandotte breed of chicken. Wyandottes are generally docile, are excellent layers (at least in my experience), are hardy in both heat and cold, and come in many beautiful color varieties. Other great choices include Australorps, Orpingtons, Plymouth Rocks, and Easter Eggers.

We're glad to have you.

My personal favorite breed is Wyandotte. Mine have been great layers and sweet, personable birds.

Ah the Vegas heat. I grew up in Havasu so I know all about your guys weather. I would most certainly worry about snakes and coyotes. Use hardware cloth everywhere and make sure you keep an eye out. Good luck!
