ive been reading all the other posts thinking of changing things around what are the pros an cons of the two ? Is it the cost ,health of birds ,cleaniness I would like to know ?

I started with the regular metal waterer and the water got real dirty, switched to a 5 gallon bucket with vertical nipples and it works great the water stays crystal clear however in winter they freeze solid and after pulling my hair out trying to figure something out I switched to horrizontal nipples they don't hold the water inside like the vertical ones so they don't freeze I put a stock tank heater in and problem solved, clean water with no mess I'm sure is healthier.

thankyou , I just ordered them this morning ,, it all makes good sense cleaner water no mess = heathler chickens lol !alredy got most of it plumed 20 gallon barrell plumed all fastened to wall all but the drinking bar , I just hope it all works like I hope , Im due for surgery next thursday so trying to tie up loose ends lol

Does the tank heater prevent the water in the lines from freezing as well?
What would you think about maybe putting water heater type insulation over the supply lines as a freezing protection measure?

I don't think it would I have them in a bucket, there are people on here that use a small pump to keep the water moving with a heat source. I would be worried about them pecking at the insulation unless you can cover it with something solid. Depending on where you live and if it doesn't get to cold it might work but in Massachusetts we had weeks of -20.

i plumed mine with a return line and a aquiraum pump that i had and a stock tank heater for a 30 gallon barrel all of the stuff I had laying around Ill try and get some pics buts its really cool IMO lol

As far as health and cleanliness a nipple system is healthier and much cleaner. Another benefit is less maintenance. As far as cost vertical nipples are very cheap to buy. The biggest complaint with vertical nipples is the leak. The other complaint is they easily freeze because they are filled with water. The horizontal nipples are spring-loaded and do not leak. Since only the back of the nipple is in the water in the nipple itself is dry. Horizontal nipples are less prone to freeze. As far as cost they may be a little more but you only need to buy them once.
