How long will I need drake jail? I am a first time drake owner and I have George in drake jail most of the day. Others talk about breeding season but can anyone give me an idea when I can let him out? He is a terror right now to all but his duck hen. I have two coops so it has not been an issue until today. Today my 3 month old gander started mounting one of my little three month old magpies. I don't have 3 coops which it appears I now need. I raised a pair of geese before but the gander was not this precocious. He is almost 20 pounds already so I supposed abuse by the drake is better. :he

Let the babies alone just keep the drake from breeding any of the babies he can actually do it. I don’t think the gander is old enough to breed. I maybe wrong but. I have had 2 baby ganders and 3 months was defiantly too young . Did you actually see mating or just practice? @onaharley can speak about drake jail.

I think just practice as I did not see any genitals. But my 20 pound gander was standing on the little magpie. He was biting her neck, not the feathers on the back of her neck but her actual neck. I had to pull him off and he usually runs when I get near him. It took her a few minutes to shake it off.

Mine get out of drake jail around July 4. Mostly, that is is because we go out of town around then and it is a lot to ask a house/duck sitter to keep everyone separate. I have done that the last two years and it has worked out. If a drake is overly aggressive though, he may never get out!

The goose was raised with the ducks and at 3months I am not sure he knows the difference. The drake is just hormonal and the little ducks are too young for sex. The drake is 7 months, his hen is 2 years. 5 three month ducks running with 3month old geese. I was hoping to separate the geese and ducks. I think the solution would be large dog crate in the coop, drake in dog crate. Ducks in coop with crate and drake. Geese in other coop and separate play time in the run. The drake can have the coop while the ducks are out. I just feel for him not to be able to noodle in the yard. He's not aggressive with anyone just wants to mate everyone.

Say that to my "ducklings"… 2½ months old and the girls try to seduce the older drake Limpy and the drake"ling" tries to hook up with one of the older girls, Nona.
Spring time, definitely!

I'm sorry but totally separate Runs for each species is needed and the age groups might be needing separated pens and not just crates till they mature.

Is Boris still scared of George even though he is much larger than George ? What would happen if you let George run with the geese? It still gives Mini no time with him though.
