Ok so i went to this ladys house to get some anconas and while i was there i saw a duck that was limping and dragging its wing like it was hurt, so i asked the lady about it and she said that her horse had stepped on it. I wanted to help this animal so i asked if how much she wanted for it and so she said i could just have it. I am just wondering what i should do with her now. I didnt really get a good look at it but i think the bone was showing and she is limping. I plan on putting some antibiotics on the exsposed bone and wrapping it and then keep her penned up till its healed more. I am pretty sure the wing is broken, and i dont know just yet how her leg is (couldnt really see it in the dark) so i will just have to figure out what to do when i get home. I really dont want her to die so i will do anything i can to help her. Any ideas on what else i can do?

I just got this bird last night and it was to dark then to get a good look at her so i left her in the cage and i will examine her when i get home.

*I will post a pic of it when i get home.

Does she still walk fairly well? Or is she flopping to get around? Do you know where and when the horse stepped on it?

she is flopping around barely, when she was at the ladys house she was getting around just barely....i was not able to get a pic up cause i dont know where the cam is but i looked at her and i think that something else happened to the duck beside getting stepped on by a horse...her left wing is broken and the bone is somewhat exposed, it is kinda grey and old looking....then this is what made me think it was not just a horse stepping on her, you would expect that her left leg would be the deformed and hurt but it was not, the right leg is injured and the whole leg is twice the size it should be and stiff...it looks like she cant bend it, the color on the foot is also a greyish color, very unhealthy looking, and the middle toe is bumped out and extremly swollen...i am very suprised she can walk right now and i think the whole right leg is beyond repair...

Poor baby! I'm glad you picked her up. At the least, she will have been warm and cared for rather than left in a pasture to die unattended. Are you able to straighten the leg to splint it? If the foot is turning grey, the leg might need to be amputated. Birds can actually live one legged, but you have to decide for yourself how much pain she's in. If she has a tremendous will to live, you might give her a chance. I would definitely give injectible antibiotics as well as supportive care.

I may be able to give some suggestions if I could see a picture. Is the leg that looks gray cold?? or is it still somewhat warm? is it swollen? If it is swollen there should still be some blood getting to it and it may be possible to try and splint the leg. The wing with the bone sticking out i would need to see to get a better idea but you can sling those with AB's and time it prob won't be useable but after healing shouldn't be any pain. If you can get a pic Pm me, I will try and help

ok i know when i am in over my head and right now i am over my head with this duck...i think the best thing to do for it is to take it to a duck rescue or bird rescue...i just dont know of any in my area.....if anyone knows of one that is within 20-30 miles of 46580 please tell me....i want to help her and i dont think i can provide the help that she needs so i need to find someone who can....

Tried a search - you might try searching "Indiana Large Bird Rescue". I don't know exactly where it is or exactly where you are, but it looks like they might be willing to take on your hurt bird. Worth a try, anyway...all I could think of. Good luck!
