Hello. I'm looking into getting my back fence to be hot to help deter a fox who has taken 2 hens. Yesterday it took my second favorite bird my beloved crossbeak Frankie. Is it possible to only make the back fence hot? At this point it's either hot fence or no more free ranging.

It is a chain link fence with metal posts. There is a gate too. I'm thinking even if I did hot wire the fence and go over top of the gate that the fox will be smart enough to go over the gate. Unfortunately I think my only option is to stop free ranging. Sad we went so long without losses almost 3 years. My husband installed an auto door he got me for Christmas and now I've lost 2 at night. I think the fox was inside the coop and carried my crossbeak off.

Is he going over or under the fence?

You will have to run a separate wire and use standoff insulators or post to hold the wire to keep it from grounding out. There are handles so you can run a wire across the gate and disconnect it to use the gate.
