Hello all

I have a 6 month old house trained wellsummer chicken , she was found on a busy rd, i have today been given a rescue chick also found at a office park abandoned, will my bigger hen hurt the baby chick? Im hoping to move them both to the garden to the coop i have built for them.

Any advice would be great. I love my chicken she is the best wild pet iv had so far🤣

Many thanks
Linda

Welcome To BYC!

We would love to see your Wellsummer! You have her house trained? Does this mean she uses a litter box or does she wear a diaper?

How old is the chick you found? Not to be a "downer" but have you looked the chick over really well to see if she's showing any symptoms of illness or external parasites? Any mucous from the nostrils, facial swelling, wheezing, etc.? Have you considered quarantining the chick away from your pullet to observe her for a couple of weeks to make sure she's well?

Your location and weather would be helpful. You don't have to give a city if you don't want, your state if fine. Adding that to your profile would be good.

Is this chick old enough to survive without heat or will you need to provide that?

It's really hard to know whether the Wellsummer will hurt her or not. She may give her a few pecks to let her know who's boss and everything will be fine. She may decide she doesn't want company. You will just have to watch and see what happens, monitor them closely.
Chickens are weirdos which I LOVE and you just can't really predict what they might do.

Okay on the few questions.

1. Baby chick arrived last night she was weak and is only at best 1 or 2 days old, she appears to be well, no lung issues or growths or any other issues, she is not big enough to survive alone, i have been comforting her and keep her by my bed in a basket i close with blanket and put a heated bean bag into. I have managed to give her some water and growing milk formula as she didnt want my oat and boil egg mix. She is still in need of great care and love.
2. She is separate from welsummer named pipin, pipin wears a home made nappy in the house but in the morning goes out to the garden and returns at night to he cuddled which is when shes nappied for a few hours then she goes to her roosting spot on my balcony.
3. I live in south africa Johannesburg its temperate weather, his up to 39°c and dose in winter go to 10°c but never snows.

Im worried about her not eating welsummer was a good eater when i found her on the rd. But seems this baby might be smaller. Shes awake and moves around I've been keeping her warm and hydrated with water and little peadasure growing milk.

Any advice would be good

Will attach pics.

Loving the photos!

I'm not good at identification, but for some reason, I don't think that is a chicken chick (I could be very wrong). @007Sean or @Gray Farms can you help with that?

I'm sorry that the baby is not doing well. I'm not that familiar with the products you have available in your area - do you have poultry vitamins or even no-iron infant vitamins?
I would give her a couple of drops twice a day of vitamins.

Try just boiled egg and see if she will eat that. Can you get feed for chicks like chick starter?
If you don't have that, then I would also boil the oats and make a thin mash out of them.

Not sure what growing milk formula is. Fowl/poultry can have milk, but a growing chick needs protein and a lot of milk may upset the digestive system.

I hope she pulls through for you. Sometimes if a little one is abandoned like that, then something may be wrong and they are failing to thrive. Even if that's the case, she's getting love and comfort from you which is priceless.

Judging by its head, I'd say its a guinea chick!
