Housing for Ducks?

I recently picked up 4 of the cutest little Muscovy ducklings that i have ever seen. They are currently residing in my smallest run attached to my chicken coop and I bring them in at night, but they need their own digs.
I have a HUGE dog kennel that is currently not in use, a combination of steel panels and chain link panels. It's a very natural setting, there are trees and a dirt floor base in it. I'm thinking that this would work out good for my ducks. I would put flight netting over the top to enclose it. However, i've noticed that in the duck pens I have seen, some of you have a board around the bottom of your pens, about 8 or 10 inches. What's the purpose of this board, and why is it necessary? Any input you could provide would be great!
Thanks in advance!

We have board around the bottoms of some of our larger runs. The only purpose for it really is to hold the sand and gravel in the run, although it does help give the run some support as well (since we don't use wood frames in our runs, just cage clips).
