I have a few midget white turkey poults that I am growing out for the freezer, but I plan to keep a few (2-3) through the winter in hopes they will lay eggs that I can hatch for more next year.
I have an aviary I am finishing up that is a former greenhouse that I removed the plastic tent part and covered the frame in 1/2 in hardware cloth. It is predator proof, I even layed hardware cloth under the patio block floor when I initially set up the greenhouse. I plan to do deep litter over the patio blocks, the inside area is 12x8 feet. I will be keeping about a dozen Coturnix quail with them. Inside I am putting some natural branch style perches (for the turkeys) in various areas, with some small bins and cinder blocks for the quail to hide in. I plan to put a run I made for the quail inside as well. The small run is a 7 foot folding table with a pvc frame around it at the table height, and covered in hardware cloth. It will have a tarp over top, so 3 sides and the roof are waterproof and wind proof. Next spring and summer I can use the small run for look but don’t touch intros, and when not in use it will be open and the birds can use it as shelter. There is also a small coop about 4x3 feet, that they will be able to shelter in as well. The coop is prefab junk and when it crumbles I’ll probably replace it with a plastic dog house or something similar I can find cheap, add perches to, and easily hose off.
Is this a good setup? I feel like the midget whites will be more happy near the ground since they are heavy meat birds, I can put some perches on top of the table cage if they want to get higher up, but once I build the bottle I can’t add a ship if you know what I mean, the aviary doors are pretty narrow, so I want to get as much of the big stuff in before I seal the last side (I’ve been on the lookout for something to replace the junky prefab coop, but I think it has another year if I put a tarp over it).
I have run an extension cord out there, and I will pass it thru the mesh, and I have a water catcher drum thing that will catch rainwater, as well as is close to the side and I can spray the hose into it easily (does not fit thru the door). I’ll connect up waterers to the drum, which has several outputs, and I have big 5g bucket feeders for food.
Anything else you guys can suggest?
