Just posted in new members forum wondering about our 8-10 week old bard rock. Does it look like a rooster ?

Ok so I am kinda freaking out hearing all these scary stories about scary roosters. Are they all mean and nasty? I have two small children so concerned for their safety. Do I have to separate the rooster from the hens? Will the rooster try to mate with all nine hens?

not all roosters are bad i have six that are just the sweetest things they love to be held and talked to now you may get a few that are mean but most tend to be nice it is a waiting game to see how he turns out lots of treats and socialization is good make sure that nobody acts in a way that could be viewed negatively by the rooster like pulling his tail etc you don't have to separate the rooster from the hens he will actually keep them safe if he is a good rooster. He will mate all nine hens but that will not hurt them for the first few months he will be a little rough mating them because he is trying to figure it all out

So is mating scary looking or violent appearing? I just would not want my little ones to see such a sight. Will the rooster make the eggs a chick? We got the hens for the eggs.
Our neighbors are not going to be happy when that bird starts cock a doodle doing!!

The rooster will mate all of your hens, some more than others. At first there can be a lot of squawking and drama, as it takes a while for all of the parties involved to get the process ironed out. As for the temperament of the rooster, it depends in part on genetics, and in part how you raise him. You need to command respect from him, but not make him afraid of you. Some roosters are naturally pretty calm, but if he shows any aggression, you need to step up and show him he can't do that toward you. If you scream or run away, he will think he can get away with this aggressive behavior, and will increase the frequency with which he acts like this. However, if you chase him away when he runs toward you, he will learn that you are not to be messed with. Roosters can be tricky business, and they are not for everybody. However, a good rooster is a real pleasure to have in the flock.

P.S.- He WILL crow, he will start at around 5:30 a.m., and will crow throughout the day. If your neighbors are going to have issues with this, you either need to talk to them now, or find a new home for your boy.

the rooster will not make the eggs a chick unless they are incubated it is usually not violent looking once they get the hang of it usually it is about a 5 second thing at first like hayduke27 said there will be some ruffled feathers and squawking but he will get the hang of it

and yes i have six roosters and love them all
