Ever since I moved into my acreage neighborhood 5 years ago I have heard peacocks calling in the distance at sundown. I have seen them in certain yards, like the folks there are keeping them intentionally. But I've seen peacocks in other parts of the neighborhood that no one claims to own. (Sadly, I saw one of those with a crooked neck, as if it had had a run-in with a predator)
This morning we were delighted to have an "ostentation of peacocks" in our very own yard! There were 7 males and 1 female. The males didn't have long tail feathers, so I'm wondering if it was a mama with her teenage sons.
I threw out wild bird seed for them to eat, and they seemed to enjoy it. My 3 guinea hens joined in the feast too. We had to leave for church then, but when I came home a few hours later they were still in the yard. I put out a pan of water and a pan of Flock Raiser for them, and had to leave again. When we got home a few hours later, we saw the female hopping over the fence & running away. The boys were already gone.
Do you think they may come back? If so, what else should I offer them besides water, Flock Raiser, and wild bird seed? Or should I discourage their presence instead? I think it would be nice to have them as yard ornaments, I don't mind their calls. I already have guinea hens & roosters, my neighbors & I are already used to bird noise! Could I just set out pans for their food & water and let them roost in the trees, or do they need more care & attention than that? Might they bother the chickens, guineas, & ducks?
