How can I help my rooster with pendulous and potential sour crop?

Hi all, we adopted our rooster a few years ago from someone who was unable to care for him with his crop condition. He has a severe pendulous crop and at the time had a case of sour crop. We cared for him to fix the sour crop and discovered chicken bras which drastically helped him move food out of his crop. Fast forward to now, it seems as if he's developed another bad case of sour crop. He clearly doesn't feel well. I've brought him inside where he can be warm and calm, have been massaging as often as I can, and have been giving him easy to digest foods, but he smells so bad and looks like he feels it too. He's very skinny and his crop is very big, and I wonder if he's lost weight because he can't move food properly. From what I've read, I probably shouldn't be feeding him but I'm torn because I think he's really hungry and am worried that part of his lethargy is from that. I'm about to call the vet for help but they typically can't get us in for a while so I'm wondering if anyone has any tips on how I can help him recover in the meantime. Many thanks in advance!

What does he eat? Do you have granite poultry grit available for him? Having had a crop disorder for some time would be very hard to treat. He may need to be on anti-fungal medicine, such as Medistatin powder, and sometimes there can be a bacterial infection as well. Are you still using the crop bra, and is it positioned well? I would try to get the vet to help him. In the meantime, you can try using miconazole cream given orally twice a day. Medistatin powder is found online. I would feed him a little egg and wet chicken feed, plus a spoonful of plain greek yogurt daily for probiotics. Here is a good article to help:

Here is medistatin (nystatin) powder to be added to water 1/4 tsp per 20 ml, and given orally 10 ml twice a day.

Thank you so much for replying! He eats layer pellets with the rest of the flock. They have access to grit and he's been going a little overboard on it I think, his crop is full of it. I'm sure he's been trying to get things moving. It's been a long journey with him and his crop issues and I'm not even sure how long he had them before we got him. I just made a vet appt for Monday but that's so far away for how bad he seems to be feeling :(

I took the bra off yesterday to be able to more easily massage so it's not on right now. He ate half an egg this morning and I've been giving him greek yogurt for the past couple of days.

I actually just got done reading that first link! Lots of good info that I'm going to keep in mind. I feel like the severity of his pendulous crop makes things harder to treat. When we first got him I honestly didn't think he'd recover and it really sucks to be having those feelings again.

it's awful for sure. I had one of my young ladies die last year from crop issues and it was so hard and awful to try everything and see them not feeling good. I hope he pulls through <3

I love people who love roos. I thought this article could be helpful. I hope so anyway. Be well. https://www.thehappychickencoop.com/sour-crop/

Do you know if there's another option for something similar to this Medistatin that might be in a store? Unfortunately due to staff shortage, we aren't receiving mail at the moment more than once a week, if that.

Nystatin is the active ingredient, and usually has to come from a vet prescription. The miconazole or monistat cream is alao antifungal, and is available without prescription at most pharmacies and online.

Some people may use acidified copper sulfate in water 1/4 tsp per gallon for 3 days, but I have not experience with that.
