How can you sex cornish cross?

Where do you get your chicks from? The cheapest price I found was Central Hatchery, where I could get 50 (which I split with my bro-in-law) for 1.18 per chick, shipping included. They only offer straight run. The other hatchery I checked was Murray Mcmurray, which cost me $2.18 per chick shipped, to get males only. So I guess that's really only a dollar more, not 2 like I had previously thought. Still pretty substantial though. If there is a cheaper hatchery that will sell males only for cheaper than that, I would LOVE to know about it. Thanks

http://www.schlechthatchery.com/chickens.htm Someone posted this link awhile back. The meat chickens are listed as: St. Run - 88¢ / Pullets - 80¢ / Ckls. - 98¢

Thanks, I found schlecht last night and saved it. I still wasn't sure if it was the best deal, but it looks like it definitely is for about .23 more per chick. Thanks again. I will order from them in the future.

Steve-good luck, I hope you will let us know. The reason I wondered is I was watching this Discovery program and I thought the chicks looked like CX, but I am not familiar enough to know. You can see them feather sexing the chicks at about 3:12. I can't believe the chicks survive the whole process of being hatched and shipped from a hatchery. I actually think it would be fun to buy a straight run and sex them and give my bro-in-law all of the pullets, since he came and hand picked the 25 "best" chicks from the brooder while I was gone. I wouldn't really do that, but it's kind of a funny thought.

Can you explain what you mean by " big farms use pullets to raise for roosters " ? Also , Townline charges $2.00 each for 25 males ; Schelct is 98 cents for males regardless of numbers . Townline does get down to $1.18 in lots of 100 and does specify the origin of the 2 strains of meaties they are selling , one of the few hatcheries doing so .

I bought my Cornish Xs from the local Family Farm & Home. They get them from Townline Hatchery. I paid 99 cents a piece for straight run (I picked up 12 meaties) . So far I am very happy with them. Nice birds!

I wish I could find a deal like that here. None of our farm stores seem to offer anything like that. I can't find chicks in the store for less than $2.45 each. We don't have "chick days" either like I have heard some posters mention. I'll keep looking, but so far schlect is the best deal for me.

Chicks got here today . The CX are definately sexable by their wing feathers , of the three I looked at , one definately showed the longer primaries and shorter coverts of a female . Also I noted that the smallest was male , so size can't be used on two day olds .

The above video was filmed at an industrial hatchery. Those chicks are sent in bulk to wholesale clients, such as factory egg laying hen warehouses, not backyard chicken retail clients. The filming conveniently cut off right before the enormous groups of male chicks were slid down into the grinder.
