How many feet from your house should a chicken coop generally be? I'm thinking about getting some chickens, and am trying to decide where to build the coop. Never had chickens before and am only going to be getting 3 to 5 egg layers. Is there any reason not to put it right up against your house, or maybe a foot from your house?

Check your local ordinances, here it has to be 100 feet from the property lines and 50 feet from the house. Do you want to be woken up by egg songs and crowing? Also flies and other pests make me move mine away from the house, as I don't want them flying near doors and windows. Even if the coop is clean, flies will still be around.

My old coop was attached to the house. As a matter of fact it still is, just not in use at the moment. The new coop is just outside the man door of the garage. I will eventually be dismantling the old one when it comes time to re-side the house, maybe this winter.

Mine is probably 6ft? from my house, i actually put in the area i have fenced for the dogs.. i wanted access to hydro and the girls easily in winter months..

I live in the country so i have no bylaws and had acres to put them elsewhere.. it's only 4 birds though so really it isn't that invasive, plus it's right off my back deck so if anybody(predators) is trying to mess with the hen house, you can get right there.
