how cold is cold for chickens?

i wanted to thank all yall for the info. it is greatly appreciated.

here is a pic of the ole aviary which used to house parrots. i was travelling so much i had to get rid of the parrots. now that im home more, i have decided to get chickens which are much lower maintenance. the aviary (now coop?) is open on all 4 sides and should be well ventilated in our summer heat. its also pretty shady which helps too.

I'm in agreement here. We got down to -20 a few times last winter and my birds didn't want to stick inside at all, they were going to their favorite spot (clover grows thick there) and still range a little bit. My birds don't have big combs or anything, but in central alabama, i would be more worried about the 100+ days not the cold ones
