How cold is TOO cold?

Dont know how cold too cold is! This is my first year with chickens.

I just wanted to say that your birds are very pretty.

I need to add a thermometer to mine as well, that's one thing I haven't thought of. I'll have to find something strange and amusing for me, maybe a John Deere or a Harley one, who knows.

Wildsky,
So glad that you posted this thread. Where did you buy your themoter for the coop? I still need to get one. I constantly worry about my birds keeping warm this winter. It's my first winter with my flock. As hindsite, my husband insulated our coop, but don't know if it will be enough.

I have 16 chickens and my coop is 8X10, well smaller on the inside once we insulated. I've read controversy threads about using heat and how it can be more harmful for the birds then helpful.

We have 2 windows and I've slid it closed to leave a small crack for ventilation.

It isn't as cold here yet, but can get as low as
-5 degrees below 0 during the winter. Burrrrrr! It's already as low as 15 degrees there!

Sorry to butt in and respond
I just bought my second remote sensor thermometer at Walmart it was like $10 but it doesn't seem to transmit the reading back to the receiver very well. I love my first one bought it at my local hardware store receives signal really good and projects it on to my bedroom ceiling so I can see it though out the night that one was on sale for about $20. Just check the range of them and make sure your coop and your house are not to far from each other I think they only have about an 80 -100 feet range. Best bet don't go cheap.

The cheap one I bought was in the outdoor thermometer section at Walmart and they sell the projection ones in the alarm clock section. They also sell more expensive ones in the outdoor thermometer section also.

I Hope any of this rambling helps you....GOOD LUCK

Thanks! I keep forgetting to get one and the snow will be here before we know it. It was suppose to be here yesterday, but didn't. It's sunny, but cool.

Smitty's Farm, where is St. Clair County? I'm in Chicago and we haven't gotten very cold yet. Low last night was 29. Just curious.
