I have been on this forum for over a week and I see posts about pasty butt everywhere. Just how common is it?

Well, I can only speak for myself, but I've not had a problem with pasty butt...thank goodness! As to how common it is, I couldn't say, sorry I'm not much help.

I'd say pretty common with young chicks. A few of mine had it when I first got them. Just cleaned them up a couple of times and it cleared in a few days. I believe it's a "stress thing"...

I am just wondering because I got 11 chicks on Tuesday. 6 week olds and 5 day/two day olds and I haven't seen any problems with them. Do you have to pick them up and examine them to see pasty butt or is it obvious

I have only been on the forum about a week too and it seems to be common from the threads I read, BUT maybe I have been lucky because none of the 8 chicks we have seem to have pasty butt. Of course, after reading these threads, I have been checking and also if I see that one has a poop trail, I clean it off so it won't get yucky.

Good luck!

Ur 6 week olds should be fine. It's usually the younger ones. It wouldn't hurt to pick them up and check. If u see "build up" dip their bottoms into warm water and easily rub off with a q-tip... It may take a bit depending on how hard/ dry build up is. Ignoring the pasty butt could cause " back up" and can be fatal... Good luck :)

My little d'uccle I bought from the fees store had it when i got it... Washed it off and it did not return. The baby I hatched never had it.

I just checked all 11 chicks and they all have clean butts

You could mix some grit in heir food. Ive done that & it helps to prevent pasting up.
