How Deep Do Chickens Dig?

I keep reading that chickens dig deep holes, but I can't see that they are deeper than 12" or so. So, what is the deepest I can expect? I'm trying to figure out how to keep gophers out of the run, while also preventing digging predators, but at the same time giving the chickens space for their feet to dig without injury.

All roads so far seem to point to concrete slab being the best remedy, with a deep soil top for the chickens to dig into.

Dig down about a foot, apply hardware cloth, back fill.

it depends.
Mine have dug a trench about 4 inches deep around the perimeter of the run.
it is however a combination of several factors. soil condition, terrain, weather, other stuff to do in the run.

Not sure about keeping gofers out. I think they can dig deeper than your usual dig apron for predators.
