How did your quail addiction start for meat, eggs, pets...

Just how many hours of light is it again needed for quails to lay? 14, or is that just chickens.

All our birds are on natural light

not a choice, we just can't run electric out there, so we are looking into getting solar panel lights for the coop, quail pen & garden porch.

Our birds are great little ornaments & I love the noises they make. My 24 eggs are in lockdown now.
Wish me luck everyone

The question at the beginning of the thread was "So when did you get addicted to keeping quail?"
For me it happened when I was browsing the Back Yard Chicken site & clicked on the "quail section", that was the big mistake for me & how I got started with my addiction ! The madness continues on today !!!

We've got something in common!

I got chickens & then got thinking.......... Quail!

What are these dear little fluffy balls of feathers everyone keeps mentioning on BYC. Oh look, there's a pic! Awwwww.

Then to hubby " they are only small. Can we get some?"

Him "What do you want quail for? You've just got rabbits!"

Me "Yes, but they do them for meat & eggs like chickens." (Its got to have a purpose, otherwise he would have said no)

Him (sign) "I suppose it won't make much difference."

Me "Hmmmm"

Him " So how many are you going to get?"

Me "Well, I want about 30 or 40."

GD91 your very lucky. My husband will fight me over animals for a while, then eventually resign and hope his dog eats them smh

we have doves and they are messy eaters
looked into quail to help clean up and its been downhill ever since
6 females gave us more eggs than we knew what to do with
after I got tired of pickling them
we started raising them in small batches
25 at a time... sold about a 100 in about 3 months time... all from those 6 females

and that wasnt even half of what we could have produced
it quickly got out of hand so I think we will take this summer off or maybe hatch for people that request it
majority of people want a cheap price over quality... not something I am willing to do
