I have an infrared camera in each of my coops so I can see what's going on.

So before going to sleep last night the pullet orientation was (left to right) bottom, front, front, front. This morning, almost 6am, the order is bottom, bottom, bottom, front.

Just wondering how they choose and what determines their choice of orientation?

I hope someone has a good answer for you. The only consistency I've noticed is that in the small A-frame coop, Honey -- the undisputed queen of all chickens -- ALWAYS gets a prime spot on the actual roost, which means someone often has to roost on the top of a sideways nest box.

I'm looking forward to seeing some responses on this one.

Mine always face forward... the wall in the back. I guess they realize nothing can come from there... and they face the "danger".
