I have a chick with an 'afterbirth' type attatchment from its bottom -= it hatched 24 hrs ago and shows no signs of improvement.

I don't want to dispatch it - but we think that might be the kindest thing - do you agree?

Does anyone know the best and most humane way to do this - as i don't want it to suffer.

Take a pair of really sharp scissors and one quick snip! Or you can place chick in a large bucket ( ice cream bucket) put a cup in there 1/2 full of baking soda and fill it with vinegar and replace lid wait three minutes chick will surely be gone! This is the method I used!

You are the one on the spot and have to make that decision. Sometimes it is for the best but I'm not there looking at it.

As far as the most humane way, there are a lot of different ways. None of them are easy, at least for me. If it is quick and sure, I consider it humane. Using poultry shears or pruning shears to take off the head, maybe a sharp knife. I know this sounds horrible and awful, but if the only way you can be quick and sure is to quickly crush it, the chick will feel nothing more than any other method. It just depends on what you can make yourself do that is quick and sure.

An off the wall suggestion. If you have a friend with a pet snake, maybe let them feed it to the snake. Or check out the local zoo to see if they want the chick as food for their animals. I'm not sure what biosecurity issues they may have, but some people might feel better if the chick served a purpose like this. It depends on you.

Thanks Guys

I think I am a wimp - I just can't do it.......too sentimental i think - thank god my Dad is here - he is tougher than i am!
