I got three chicks from our local farm supply back in the first week of April. Two of the three ended up being roos and had to be re-homed because we live in a neighborhood with RCs :( Anyway, the one remaining pullet is lonely and I have been searching for friends for her that are about the same age and size. A few people here on BYC and a chicken lady friend of mine in town seem to think she might be a bantam! If she is, I'd like to stick with similar sized breeds!

But the longer I wait to assess her growth trajectory, the older and perhaps more resistant to new friends she will be! Anyone know how I can tell if she's a true bantam or a full sized hen breed!??

She looks tiny. Definitely a bantam. There are standardised weights and sizes for large fowl and bantams of each particular breed. In general the bantams tend to weigh less than 1kg as adults, some only about half a kilo.

Looks like a bantam to me. She is proably either a Black Tail Buff Japanese Bantam, Black Tailed Buff Old English Game, or a Nankin.

How can I tell which of those breeds she is!? I'm surprised I got her at a farm supply store--aren't these breeds fairly uncommon?

Here she is today (my shoe is a women's 7)

IMO, her type doesn't look like that of a Japanese, so that narrows it down to two breeds (Nankin and OEG). Nankins are somewhat rare, so I would lean more towards Black Tailed Buff Old English Game. There is no real way to tell for sure, though, as the two breeds are very similar.
