How do I resize my pic to use it as my avatar?

Hope I put this posting in the right place, I'm still new so sorry if it's in the wrong area. I need help please. I tried using the upload button, under my profile, personality, but it doesn't have a place to resize the pic (like when you upload pics to a BYC page) so what should I do now? I know a bit about computers and can figure stuff out if it's explained in simple computer lingo.
