I need to know the good and bad and the ugly of chicken keeping. I want to get some chickens but need to talk my husband into it.

PROS:
  • chickens are just as easy to take care of as cats, believe it or not.
  • They give farm fresh eggs
  • they always bring laughs, whether you're giving them treats or just watching them!
  • They are so cute, and there will always be one that will love being handled.
  • You can buy a coop if you dont want to build one, or have fun building one!
  • you can save money by never buying grocery tore eggs! (Always a plus)
  • females are great with kids
  • you can even use their feces for fertilizer, it is very rich.
  • Hens are quiet at night
  • MANY breeds to choose from, so you can find the perfect one for you!

CONS:
  • Roos are not very good with children
  • Roos crow
  • You might lose some, it is not uncommon in chickens
  • there are laws you might have to work around
  • NEIGHBORS, they are the worst!
  • Chickens tear up a lot of grass, depending on how much freedom you give.

Honestly those are the only cons i can think of, and even then they are not that bad! I really hope this will help show your husband that chickens are so much fun and good to have! I dont wan† you missing out on such a wonderful experience!

I've only had chickens for about a yr. so here goes..

Bad- start up cost, like building a coup, run etc. but can easiely be offset by using used materials and such.

Good- pretty much low maintaince depending on how many you have and how big your waterer and feeders are besides egg collecting you don't have to do much else. I use pine shavings as bedding and just add new every so often. Bedding also compacts into great compost for gardens and such. Eggs taste much better and i know my chickens live better and get treats unlike factory farms. Fun to watch on a hot lazy day.

Ugly- Can't really think of anything but if you don't have power at your coop and have cold winters sometimes its a pain getting up and switching out waterers that are frozen.

In the end I say it was worth it to have chickens their easy to care for, fun to watch and in this day in time its good to know what went into at least some food i eat.

from Highland County Ohio!!! Here are my Pros and Cons.

Pros

  • Farm fresh eggs (they are healthier and yummier then the eggs from the store)
  • Great fertilizer (we had the chickens pooping on the garden in the winter and now the garden is going crazy!)
  • They are really funny we laugh at them all the time
  • They save you money (chicken feed is not that expensive)
  • Very easy (all I do with the chickens is feed and water them once a day, let them in and out in the morning and evening. And then move the coop and clean it out once a week.)
  • Hens can be very friendly with kids and other pets
  • It is fun to watch them grow from chicks to grown chickens

Cons

  • Most (not all) rooster are not as friendly as hens
  • Roosters crow very loudly (neighbors usually don't like that)
  • You need to buy or build a coop
  • They will dig holes in the ground unless you give them something to dust-bath in
  • You most likely will have to deal with the death of a least one chicken
  • If they are not in a run and just wandering around the yard during the day, you need to watch them. They will stay together but they will go together out of the yard and meet to neighbors

Good luck!!!

from New Mexico!

I was getting some flack around here at first. So I came home with some chicks from the feed store one day and of course his heart softened enough to build me a coop.

What's that saying? If momma ain't happy ain't nobody happy?

The cons are a small price to pay for a happy wife, right?

Lucky for me my husband saw a chicken coop at a shed place and thought "oh, how cute...and not that expensive....we could get some chickens". I may never have loved him more than at that moment.
