watch out they are addicting!

In my experience you just mention that you would like to have chickens some day, and then from that moment on, he keeps asking you when you are going to get chickens!

In my case though, the answer was always, "after you build a coop".

He finally did this year, so we just started out a couple weeks ago. I don't have a ton of experience yet, but I can say that so far, they have been so fun! They grow so fast and change everyday, we love watching all their antics. I have heard others call it watching chicken TV, and it really is (and as my son would say, it's the "cheap-est TV you'll ever watch"! If you hold them from the beginning they are pretty tame, and it is the sweetest thing when they sleep in your hands!

We have one or two that always run to you when you walk up to talk to them, and a few that will hop into your hands when you lower down for them. They really are family pets (more than I thought they would be) and it has been very bonding for all of us to have this shared interest. Not to mention the educational value for the kiddos (actually all of us are learning a lot! And they eat bugs!! And as others have mentioned, I love knowing where some of our food is going to come from. They are so much more nutritious (I think I read 25% lower cholesterol, and higher omega 3's) and are supposed to taste much, much better. Some say that once you taste them, you will never be satisfied with store bought again. Not to mention all the colorful eggs you can collect (like an easter egg hunt every day, lol)! It just feels so wholesome!!!

It's much easier to get forgiveness than it is permission darlin! Go get them and then say something preposterous like, look what followed me home! LOL Seriously, once he's held them, there's no going back. That's just too much cuteness for anyone! I wanted 3 turkeys. Hubby got in on it and we now find ourselves with 24 birds! 12 turkeys, 8 broad breasted bronze, 4 broad breasted whites and 12 chickens, 4 barred rocks, 4 golden sex links and 4 rhode island reds. As of this morning we have 8 auburn heritage turkey eggs (special mail delivery!!) ready for incubation and I am lusting over a breed of chicken called a blue laced red wyandotte! Trust me, it's super addictive! What's not to love???

WELCOME!!!!

My husband was not enthusiastic about chickens and was pretty much against it.....then my mom decided "she wanted chickens" and then promplty moved to Oregon and left me to care for them. We had three to start with and the dog attacked them in the coop so I had two and ordered 4 more...... Has anyone explained chicken math to you? So I built the coops with out any help from him and cleaned the coops and still he wasn't budging one tiny bit.

Then they started to lay eggs....and his coworkers wanted to buy fresh eggs.....and I let him keep the money....then we ordered more chickens and I got him plans for a pallet coop and he built it from FREE pallets ,,, by the way that is the best coop.....well soon we had 8 bantams, and a total of 55 chickens and more eggs than we knew what to do with ...I live on 5 acres of land so that was not a problem.....He really likes the chickens now. Way more than the cats. He makes a good living but gets a kick our of egg money not only supporting the feed purchase but also being mad money for movies or fun and I let him use it for whatever. My husband Andy is an Eagle scout and scouts are thrifty......We bought oops paint at lowes for $5 and they gave us a $5 doller rebate because of the brand....so it was FREE. He gets buckets from bakeries for free and makes them into waterers and feeders and sometimes cuts them in half and makes nest boxes.....for free..... I think he loves the idea of getting free stuff and re purposing it in a way that supports the activity and his coops are beautiful so it is a win win all the way around.

find a way to get your husband involved so you both enjoy the activity

Caroline
