Hello and thanks for seeing this thread. As the title suggests, I want to tame quails but I have 0 experience with quails. I just bought them out of the blue when I saw them suffering in a pet shop. But they are behaving weirdly, I think it's because of the cage system. The cage I have, the door is up so I'm thinking that's why my quails are scared? If yes, then I will probably cut a part in front of the cage. Oh and also, are corriander leaves edible for quails? Thank you.

Would you mind posting a picture of them and the enclosure? The image will give it away but do you know what species of quail because they can vary in ways for taming, etc? Thank you for seeing these quail in need and helping them! :) That’s a very noble and high thing of you to do and I’m sure within time you’ll have more experience with them and love them to death! :)

Yeah. They are coturnix. And for pictures, I can't sorry lol. By the way, what about corriander leaves? I wanna give it to them as a treat. Not sure if it's safe to them. Thank you

What do you mean by behaving weirdly? Do they seem sick or injured, or just cowering and running in circles?
While you tame them, give them a small cardboard box or something that they can hide in or hide behind. This will give them a sense of security. They may also be in a poor male/female ratio. A male needs at least 3 and preferably 6 hens or else he will overbreed and even kill a single or two hens. If you post a picture I can try to sex them if they are a feather sexable color, and you may have to get rid or separate some for their safety.
Insects and seeds are their favorite foods. Scatter some millet in their cage for them to hunt and peck for. They may even be brave enough to take mealworms from your hand. Be sure to give them a proper sized grit for digesting.

How much space do they have? They should have a minimum of 1 square foot/bird. Make sure you're subtracting space used by feeders, waterers, and hides. They should have places to hide. These things will make them calmer and easier to tame.

They're probably never going to be really tame unless you spend a lot of time with them every day. You would want to start by getting them used to having you around. That means being near their pen a lot. Feed them small amounts of treats (no more than 10% of their diet). Gradually increase your interaction with them until they are calm around you.

I found that level cages work best for button quails (similar to yours) and adding hide a ways . Frequently add treats and sit by the cage so they get use to you. Mine are not hand tamed (do not want cuddles and scratches from me)but they are not afraid of me and will beg for treats. They originally had an entire flight cage with three levels and a bunch of hideouts. They also enjoy playing in Timothy hay and powder (I use tops pellet powder). I recently downsized their cage and the cage has three levels not including the ground level. It is a quarter the size of their flight cage but they seem happier as I am able to interact with them more and are apart of the group. In the wild the have tall grass, logs and ground cover to hide. If I were you I’d look into level ferret or chinchilla cages Or look into making your own. (For me it was important to create/look for ramps And steps for them to get to each level) Help them feel secure and that your presence means good things (treats).
Congratulations on you quails ! Be sure to add calcium supplements if you have females (I’ve found egg shells work best - where I live I buy quail eggs and Organic chicken Eggs) and look into what you need in case one of your birds become egg bound - it’s always better to be prepared.
Now that you have birds knowing what can kill them will be key because they have very sensitive respiratory systems. Scented candles, non stick cookware, most hair driers(Because some have non stick elements inside them) , anything with Teflon coating, paint fumes, etc.

For treats I use Harrison high potency pellets and I get a high protein chick pellet from the feed store. This is their regular food I give in small amounts three times a day and I also add veggies and other foods that they have access to through the day.
Chopped celery
Eggs
Leafy greens
A tiny bit of ground meat (I don’t feed bugs)
Fruits
Carrots
Green n red pepper
Sometimes a little cheese
Once or twice a week I’ll add a little plain grass fed organic yogurt for probiotics.

I fully agree with Nabiki! Just sit near the cage and play quietly on your phone so they can get used to the sight of you, then bust out the mealworms once they get calm enough to walk up to you. Live mealworms are my irresistable go-to for rewards and coaxing!
