How do I treat a sinus infection?

One of my 4 month old runners sounds congested, making squeaking noises when she breathes. Her face is swollen. One eye is runny and there is a bb-sized lesion on her forehead between her eyes. It appears to be draining.
There is no drainage from her nares.
I did not see any signs of illness until this evening.
She has been active all day, free ranging with the other ducks.
Her weight is good.
I have her isolated and put Duramycin in her water.
Is this a sinus infection and what is the best treatment ?

Truthfully she needs seen by a vet. It sounds like an injury with infection and a vet can access what treatment and medications are needed. Sorry she isn't well.

Certainly sounds like a sinus infection to me - swollen face/eye area generally means infected sinuses. Do you mean that her sinuses seem to have ruptured and are now leaking out of a hole in her face? If its that serious I think it will be difficult to treat successfully at home. For something like that I'd see a vet. If it's viral then antibiotics won't help but a vet can flush the sinuses out. If it's bacterial then the right antibiotics can be prescribed. But, if a vet visit is not possible then I'd flush the ruptured area and her eyes using a syringe or eye dropper with some salty water (a teaspoon of salt dissolved in a cup of lukewarm water) then dry and apply some betadine to the wound, or a similar antiseptic solution. I'd do that a couple of times a day. Keep her warm and give her some vitamins in her water. You can continue with the duramycin but most over-the-counter antibiotics like that are low dose and not very effective, unfortunately. Still, it's worth a try.

Good move to have isolated her.

Fingers crossed for your girl. It sounds like she is otherwise a healthy bird in good condition so that will help her fight it.

She's looking less swollen this morning but is not eating or drinking. I called my vet- they don't treat birds and won't sell an Rx w/o seeing the animal. (I'm still fuming over that answer.)
What can I buy at TSC that might be effective ?

I don't know what you can buy without prescription in the US so I'm no help there.

It's good that the swelling has reduced. I wouldn't worry too much about her not eating right now but I would be trying to get some liquids into her. Try to dribble some electrolyte solution into her bill (try dripping it on to her bill but if she doesn't swallow you may need to get her bill open and have a bit of a fight about it. Don't squirt liquid in - just drip or dribble).

The vet could have at least looked her over- while it can be hard to find an avian expert- most vets should be able to at least use a stethoscope to listen to the breathing you would hope.

Is the the ducks "cheeks" that are swollen? It could be a sign that more is wrong than just a respiratory infection. Ducks can have an abscess form and this can cause more serious problems for a duck than trouble breathing. but since you say the swelling is going down- that is a good thing. But you will need to give her some close attention over the next few days.

you need to call around and every time they say they dont treat birds ask for a referral to someone who does. Universities often have programs that will see and treat them.
