pretty sure it had more to do with you waiting for it to get dark outside and allowing them to go inside on their own. Chickens have a very strong natural desire to roost in the same place. They go to roost at dusk year around. I have trouble getting mine inside if I need to leave in the middle of the day, but have never had an issue with them going to their roost just as it is gettting dark. I have never found it necessary to give them light to get on the roost.
