By thumbnail are you meaning pictures?

Use the blue upload a file button, wait for it to upload, then click thumbnail.

I think you are meaning you want to add a cover image to your article correct?

Looks like the pictures were copied/pasted to the article, not uploaded.

Use this button to upload pictures.
Like @casportpony mentioned above...once it "uploads" you will then have the option to choose full image or thumbnail.
