How do you know if a chicken egg is dead?

I'm hatching some chicks under my broody hen and I went to go check for hatchling when I found a chick I thought was hatching to not be moving. I brought in inside and removed some of the shell (it is still has membrane still on) I can't hear chirping and theres no movement. I'm pretty sure that it has died but I can't be sure so I've put it in the incubator and I keep checking it but nothings happening. I don't what to do. Can someone help me

Im no expert, but usually you can hear them piping or peeping when they are in the shell so if you hear no sound now that is not a good sign. I would try and pull more of the shell off, but i would think it is likely dead?
