How do you know which eggs are which?

How can you mark them? Can you just use a permanent marker?

Some say pencil but I hand turn so it almost always rubs off. I've been using a permanent marker with good success.

I use colored pencil. I have three different hatches going at once, so they need color coordinated. Some colors are hard to read, though, so I am considering writing the name of the pair in regular pencil, and then drawing a colored star on it. Write it on the top of the egg, so when the chick pops out, your markings are still intact.

I mark every egg with a nontoxic crayon leftover from my son.

I use all the eyebrow pencils I have bought and hated. Works great!
