How do you manage going away from home for a few days?

My husband and I haven't had a vacation in over a two years now and are trying to plan one just because we need to get away and de-stress from life. We asked some people we went to church with, who are unemployed and therefore need the money we can pay, to take care of our birds and they seemed to be interested in doing so but when they came over today they wouldn't listen to anything I told them, they asked no questions, and the man kicked my birds and kept talking about hitting my geese to make them "shut up". Needless to say we aren't going to have them taking care of our birds while we are gone.

What do you do when you go out of town for a few days? Do you just leave enough food and hope no predators get in? Or do you have systems where the chickens will get locked in at night and let back out? Do you hire someone? How do we do this?

We're only going to be gone for five days so we are only really worried about the three days in the middle. We have big waterers so we aren't worried about water for them and we've had NO problems with any predators at all (unless you count the neighbors who hate us). We don't have a feed system in place that lasts for more than a couple of days but could build one pretty easily. We just don't want anyone calling the city and complaining that we aren't caring for our animals.

We usually put them up at night and let them out again in the morning. Then we're out checking on them and cleaning up after them multiple times a day and let them out to free range when we can sit with them and keep watch so ordinarily no one could ever say we were neglecting them in any way but if we're gone, I'm sure the neighbors would take advantage.

Any ideas??

do you have both the coop and a run? Is your run secure from predators? If so maybe you can supply enough food in water to last for the time you are gone, and have a friend or a friendly neighbor ( if you have one!) check in on them each day. I tell all my helpers that they can keep all the eggs the hens lay while I am gone.

We do have a coop and a run for them and have had no problems with predators in over a year now. The run is surrounded by 7 foot fence on two sides and a garage wall down a third side and the coop all along the fourth side. We offered all the eggs and $$ as well just to make sure things were done. sigh. I'm thinking maybe the neighbor man across the street, who we give eggs to all the time, might be willing to check them once a day for us but we'll have to see.

I think bribing a neighbor with eggs (and/or money) should work. I have a neighbor come by twice a day to check out the food/water situation, and mine aren't even laying yet. We're trading for occasional cat-sitting.

Good luck and enjoy your vacation!

Is there a reliable teenager in your area?. My son who is 15 chicken sits for lots of the neighbours when they go away. Each one pays him different rates but he doesn't care he is happy to help the neighbours out.

I have a pet-sitter that does a very good job. She does exactly what we ask, and leaves detailed notes about what went on. Check your local paper or ads at your feed store. It costs, but it's worth the peace of mind.

Vacation? A few days away?

What the heck is that?

OK, that's all the levity I have. Anyway there a lot of things to check out. Like the local 4H extension office, see if any FFA( Future Farmers of America)members in your community to name a few. Put an add at your local feed store to some tween that might be thinking about getting chickens to get a little OJT with a couple of bucks for payment plus eggs.

Almost forgot there is a chicken sitting thread here, just do a search and the OP will PM you if someone is in your area.

We don't. We never have gone on vacation, not before or after we had chickens. If I had to leave, I'd pay my friend to come down from Kentucky to house sit and care for my birds because they know her, she knows and loves them, and knows exactly what they need and will take excellent care of them. I trust no one else with them, period.

The LAST person I'd trust is a family member.
