My daughter asked me this, and I of course had no clue. My "chicks" are 9 weeks old, and though they still peep like chicks much of the time, they look like chickens. Dual purpose breeds mostly, except for one dark cornish rooster. They have about 180 square feet of run to keep active in, they get free access to starter/grower feed, plus a few small meal worms apiece in the morning, and sometimes assorted fruit and vegetable scraps, and the bugs they find, but no scratch. How do I tell if I need to stop the free access and limit their rations? What will an obese young chicken look like?

On formulated feed, I can't really see any chicken who has space to move/peck/scratch around becoming overweight. I don't feed a lot of bread scraps, but just about anything else goes scrap-wise. And a bit of treat even on a daily basis is fine. I would never restrict feed (some do with cornishX meaties, but that's pretty much it).
I would consider a bird overweight if I had trouble feeling the breastbone. Some breeds will definitely LOOK overweight because they're fluffy or stockily built...

Tell your daughter chickens are smart enough to quit eating when they're full and as a rule don't get fat. Just don't get her started on cornish cross.............
