I picked some up today at PetSmart and they are refrigerated so they'll last a while. My chicks are only a few days old, less than a week, but I've read on here how much chicks enjoy mealworms. So I was wondering how soon I should give them. I've tried giving them scrambled eggs and plain yogurt mixed with their regular starter pellets, but they haven't been too interested in either yet.

Also, do any of you just raise your own mealworms and if so, how do you go about that?

Well, granted...its been a while since i had chicks

Other than the newborns I just got of course....

But I was always told to not really give them treats til they were about 3 weeks old or so, so they would eat the important chick starter and get off to a good start. Just like kids, they can get filled up on treats and not the healthy foods.

Mealworms are great fun, but I also never gave them to my chicks till they were at least 3 weeks old. I had been told by many people that the mealworms have a tendency, especially with young chicks, to have the head of the worm do some damage inside the chicks. So I would get my trusty bird scissors and snip the heads off of the worms lol

Now, once they were fully feathered...I took that to mean mealworm central and let them go at them heads and all and they loved them.

I might have been told wrong....but this was my first batch of chicks on my own, and the info I was given were from people much more knowledgeable than myself.
