How fast does it take a hen to decide if she wants to go broody

Does she start to display symptoms over a couple hours and you can stop her or is it like she just sits down then decides she wants chicks then doesn't leave? I ask this because sometimes one of my hens goes broody and the day before she is just fine then boom egg sitting time

Mine watched another hen act broody for about a week, and now she is in that nest, not getting out, and sitting on a combination of infertile and ceramic eggs. Best of luck to her with that hatch.
