I got my 8chicks on April 3 and 2 more on April 10 from TSC. I put a broad in the cage which is about 4inch wide by 1/2 [is a base broad scrap]? i need to make a bigger cage for them until i can get them into the coop. some time in may. so i am wonder is how tall should the perch be of the cage floor now they are fly up onto the side cage now, iam going used green square garden wire[4ft tall] for now and a cement mixing pan. the chicks will still be in house until we build the chicken coop.
the question should i makes the cage tall for now?

Hi and welcome

You don't need to make it tall if you have some netting (or anything else) to cover the brooder with. Also, my chicks didn't perch for sleeping at night until they were older. They used to just lay around in a pile with each other, although they did like to perch on things during the day while just hanging out with each other.

We used a baby playpen for our teenagers while they were inside (sides maybe 3' tall), and we tied a 2" tree branch across the top for a roost. They had no trouble jumping up onto the sides (which made quite a mess) or using the roost. They had a lot of fun with it and didn't leave the pen...well...not while we were looking...

I guess it depends on whether you WANT them to get up or not. The roost could be an easy step up, however, putting it lower than 1 foot might insult their intelligence

My chicks were hatched on 3/26 & they are already roosting. We started them with a small stick just laying in the bottom of the brooder. My husband found a decent sized branch that we have about 6 inches off the floor of the brooder & our chicks are all roosting on it & even sleeping there. Once the first one got up there, all of them decided they could do it too. They really seem to love the branches & sticks in the brooder. Also, we are using an extra large dog crate that my husband reinforced with hardware cloth as a brooder & it works out really well. Good luck with your chicks!
