How late in the day will chickens lay?

I know it takes about 26 hours between eggs. So, if a chicken is scheduled

to lay an egg after it's dark and they've "gone to bed", will she get up and lay it? Or will she just wait 'til she gets up in the morning?

If it's after dark, they will usually wait till the next day. I've had them heading to the nestbox at dusk though. If they can still see to climb into it, they'll stay there till they finish. Amazingly, if I have a hen still on the nest after dark and leave her there she'll lay her egg and not foul up the nest with poo, all night long.

i've had hens lay eggs on their perch at night/early morning, but they usually wait until there's some
light and crawl into a nest box.
