How long between broodies' batches?

I am experienced with one broody hen, but this second one really threw me for a loop. I had one hen (Australorp) go broody last weekend, with 16(! thankfully they won't all hatch) eggs. Another Aussie went broody today. I know that two broodies may or may not kill/steal the other's chicks, but I don't want that risk. How long do I need to wait between batches to keep the killing and disappointment to a minimum? I can keep them separated, but I'd rather not. And I can't keep #2 off a nest without making my own mother upset.

Oh, and both are a year old and not experienced mothers.

There is no set rule, but I would say two weeks or so. That way the first batch are out ranging and not brooding under the hen all day. That said, you should be prepared to separate them if needed.

I would divide the eggs between the two because with 16 eggs, none may get covered all the time, and with that many they stand a chance of getting smashed when she comes and goes to eat.
