How long can a chicken live?

I've never had any make it past a meal. Sorry, bad joke.

I have a few laying hens that I just can't see go yet, nor would they be any good in the oven. They still lay so they will stay around for a while. They will be 4 next spring.

I don't keep birds as pets, but I can see how you could keep one for many years. They are great creatures!

They can live alot longer then most people imagine, as long as you don't mind not getting a eggs everyday, and don't slaughter them when their production goes down.

I had a hen for 5 years, a roo for 7 but he was 6 when we got him, so He was 13. He only died because we trimmed his spurs: didn't hurt him, but he got depressed and didn't eat. Most of our other layers get really dumb past laying age and end up wandering off or getting taken by fox or raccoon around age 2 or 3.
