I got some Wade-Jeane C-1 chicks from BYC CrazyforEggsJulie last fall. We have 6 new babies from them. I have kept the flock closed.
I also have a Bev Davis Line and a Davis-Wade-Jean line I house all separately. Is there a benefit/disadvantage to keeping the C-1's closed. How long before problems crop up--any advice and knowledge on this would be greatly appreciated! Kathy

It always depends on the quality of your starter birds....hatching 6 isn't going to do it. It can be done by keeping the best pullet and crossing her back to the sire and keeping the best cockerel and crossing him back to the dam there are plenty of old books that explain how to go about keeping the line pure most important thing is starting with excellent birds which is difficult with any Marans and then knowing what to cull and what to keep as to improve what you have.
