i had a turkey pass from poking through the air cell but never pipping.
I have a baby chick right now on day 20. Still moving and I think it poked through the air cell.

How long can they breath in the air cell before suffocating to death?

Thanks!

I'm sorry to hear that.

I find that chicks usually die at around a day after attempting to pip. I've had chicks that were apparently too weak to hatch. This can be due to temperature, humidity, genetics, or the nutrition of the parents, as well as deformities or poor positioning of the chick or too small or misshaped eggs.

I hope your next egg hatches well!

When I'm worried about a hatching chick then we poke a hole, very carefully, with a needle around where the beak is so that it can get oxygen. Still, even with a hole, a chick can die while attempting to get out.

When I hatched my chicks last year, if they were trapped (they'll die if they're trapped forever), I would slowly peel back some of the hard shell. Be sure not to peel the inner membraine shell, and I've had a few live with my help, otherwise they would have definitely died.

It's a tough thing to do, many people say don't help, that's partially true, only help if its like a day and they're still not out.

You're welcome. :) I'm glad he's safe. It's hard to have to help because there is the chance of hurting them, but they would just pass away anyway so it's a risk I always found worth taking to try and save them.
