And does it make a difference if they're not supplemented w/ artificial light?

they can lay upwards of 2 years and can lay even longer if allowed to rest during non-seasons from what I read so yes artificial light can have something to do with it.

They can live for around 5 years, so I'd say if you allow them to NOT lay during the winter months (which is easy, just dont provide them any artificial lighting and they won't) then they may lay the whole time they are alive as long as supplimented with good protien and calcium diet
