How long do I quarintine hen?

I bought a 1 year old hen. I am keeping her in a seperate pen from the rest of my flock which is right next to hers. Just chickens wire seperates them. My rooster (which is also 1 year old) really wants to get to her. So how long should I quarintine her?

I have read that you shouldn't put them near each other at all at first. Keep them a safe distance away from the rest of your flock for at least 30 days to make sure that she is healthy. If they are in the same area if she is sick then she will give her germs to the rest of them and they could all get sick. I have read really sad stories on this forum about people having all there chickens die because of just one that they brought in.

I quarantine for at least amonth and generally longer. I have had mine close enough where they can see each other but far enough so they can't interact or breath the same air. I guess I've been lucky as I've had no problems or illnesses.

When you quarantine, the point is to make sure they don't exchange microbes. You could put up a piece of plywood to prevent direct contact, and as long as they are outdoors, the air circulation should be sufficient to prevent the passing of diseases back and forth.

In Raising Chickens for Dummies, two weeks is suggested as a minimum quarantine.
