wife had surgery and between taking care of her annkids I have missed picking eggs a couple times. It’s in the mid 90’s here in Louisiana and I’m not sure how long eggs can sit in the coop without going bad. If I miss a day are eggs still good the next evening. I usually pick after work right before dark so that would be around 18 hours sitting in the nest box. TIA for replys

There are two ways eggs can become unsuitable for you to use. One is if bacteria gets inside and grows. That's what we call a rotten egg, it stinks to high heaven. One of the last things a hen does when she lays an egg is to put a coating on it, called bloom, that helps stop bacteria from going in through the porous shell. As long as that bloom is still there, it is really effective. A hen can lay eggs in a hidden nest for two weeks and then incubate them for three more and bacteria normally does not get inside and kill the chick. If that bloom is washed off, scratched off, or if the egg is really dirty it is at risk. That's one reason you should open them in a separate bowl before you use them.

Are those eggs fertile? In the temperatures we have been having it is possible fertile eggs can start to develop. They won't develop enough to hatch but they might start. Even if they do develop they are safe to eat but thee is a Yuk! factor there. Again, open them in a separate bowl and see if there is anything in there you don't want to eat. You are highly unlikely to see anything after 36 hours unless a broody hen is sitting on them day and night.

This has nothing to do with how long an egg is left in the coop, but it is possible our eggs can have meat spots or blood spots in them. Sometimes for different reasons an egg has something included in it, nothing to do with it being fertile or a rooster. Commercial operations electronically candle their eggs so customers don't see those and sell those eggs to places that crack eggs before they use them like bakeries or pet food manufacturers. Nothing unsafe about eating them but again there can be a Yuk! factor. Another reason to open our eggs in a separate bowl.

Bottom line I would not hesitate to eat them but I'd break them in a separate bowl first.
