How long on average do people keep their hens?

Wow, I had no idea they could live into their 20's! Amazing. I was thinking 10-12 years.

Mine are with me for life as well. I'll admit to getting a bit frustrated that egg production seemed have slowed to a standstill this Spring, but this morning my dd and dgd discovered two gigantic hidden nests with 50+ chicken eggs and 5 goose eggs in them! While I wanted chickens primarily for the eggs, they've given me so much more than that. They are my friends, therapists and confidantes; they make me laugh and appreciate the beauty, diversity and distinction in nature. I love them all, but of course there are always those special ones that really get close to your heart. I started with 12 and have just kept adding.. I keep my roosters too.

I had my first flock for about 4 years (only 3 birds, lived up in the city) until they were taken by a predator. Had many predator problems after moving out to the country, and lost another flock. I'm on my third and largest flock yet (30 birds). My birds turn over occasionally, depending on what my needs are. If I'm growing out some babies and need room, I may sell a few hens. Of course, there are some favorites that will be with me forever.
Overall, though, when I do sell a bird, they always seem to go to someone who really cares for their flock.
