I just had a good first experience ordering a bad of Kalmbach All-Flock pellets through Chewy. My other feed orders, for dog and chicken feed, have also been fresh.
Kalmbach explained to me their dating system: The manufacturing date is the digits printed on the white tape on the bag. The first two digits are the year and the next three are the day of the year. For example, if it reads 20050, that would be Feb 19 as that is the 50th day of the year.
The code on my bag was 20310 = Nov. 5. It came on Dec. 7, 2020, so the feed is 1 month old—if I have decoded correctly.
I leave reviews on any feed I buy from Chewy praising freshness, as I want to encourage and reward that. However, that already seems a value to them as all the feed I have gotten has been fresh. I cannot say the same for my local Tractor Supply. TSC has its strengths but freshness other than its own Dumor brand seems an issue, at least at my store.
From what I have read, feed quality declines very slowly but its appeal goes down much faster. I want the most palatable feed I can get, of course.
