Hello from MI. My broody buff orp started sitting on 5 eggs (hopefully all fertile-didn’t candle) the night of 6/23. Yesterday early a.m. I heard peeps and saw one baby. I checked on her through out the day yesterday and still no others. This morning she is still sitting tight but I can only see the one chick who seems to be getting feisty in the nest. Will she know if the rest won’t hatch? Is it possible more are in her feathers and very quiet? I don’t want to bother her too much, she’s probably already sick of me going in and out of the coop.

Something in the hen just clicks, and she will walk away from whatever eggs are left under her.
The chick is good for a couple days without food/water from what I’ve read. This allows momma to finish hatching.

Keep us updated on how things progress!

What @Something Cool has said, newly hatched chicks can go about three days without water and food (they still have the yolk they are tapping into) which gives time for other chicks to hatch...after that, both Momma and babies need water and food. Momma will be starved and eat like there's no tomorrow - it's OK for her to eat the Starter feed that you will want to provide for the babies...it's high in protein, etc. and she needs that after such a period of going without...you may need to dip the chicks' beak into the waterer to get them started but after that, they get the hang of it. Just be sure it's a shallow water bowl so they don't fall in and drown. She will turn her focus on raising the hatchlings and will most likely just walk away from any unhatched eggs...be sure to throw them out! You don't want an egg that bursts!

Thank you, still no sign of any new ones. She is laying in the nest in such a way that even when the one that peeks, out I can’t tell is even there in her feathers. It did hop out of the nest today and ate some crumble and somehow figured out how to drink water without momma ever leaving the nest. I am a bit worried now because last year she hatched out 4 and they all were within hours of each other. The eggs were all layed the same day she started sitting-not staggered. 😟

Sad update...I walked out to the coop to check on her and the smell was horrendous! She had made a huge poop in the nest with the eggs still under her. My son and I moved her and her baby out of the nest to clean it up and I checked the 4 remaining eggs and they were all duds 😔. only one other was fertilized and it quit very early. So my husband is going to pick up a few more babies tonight, hoping I can tuck them under her and she will accept them 🤞🏼🙏🏼 . I stuck a couple porcelain eggs in her nest, she still wants to sit!
