I've recently culled my birds to the largest 12 hens and 3 roos. I want to set the next round of eggs but want to make sure they are fertilized by the big boys rather than a freezer camper. How long before the old roos influence is out of the hens system?

about 2-3 weeks. If you are seling pure eggs or chicks go for 3 weeks-I do and have never had a problem-at 2 weeks She was still throwing chicks from the other roo!!!

However, even in chickens, unless it is critical, you don't need to wait that long. Most likely the offspring will be from the most recent mating, and in chickens at least, with their "sperm bank", its a last in first out situation, so the new roo would have to be neglecting his duties for the old sperm to have much of a chance.

I think it's pretty much the same for any bird, though I've read on here that it should be about 10 days
