My dh and I are confusing each other and of course we are both right. We have a triple chicken pen. It has 3 coop compartments. It is 8 foot tall. Two of the sections are 6x6, and the other is 12x6. How many chickens should each pen be comfy for?

Are you asking about coop size (sleeping & nesting area) or does your pen include the run (place to scratch around in during the day) in your measurements?

The most common minimum spacing recommendations per chicken are:

4 square feet in the coop. That's for chickens that are free to go outside during the day.

10 square feet in an attached run.

10 square feet in confinement housing. That's where the chickens are locked in their living space all the time.

Some warm weather housing designs are more open, with no walls between the covered area for roosting, laying, etc. and the run portion. I think the confinement recommendations fit that design well.

It makes a big difference whether this is all the space the chickens have, or whether there are also ample-sized outdoor runs they'll be able to use all day.

If there is no run, I would not personally put more than 3 chickens in a 6x6 pen, or 6-7 *max* in the 12x6.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat

i have 44 bantams and 440 sf of run planned
so far I have built 2 pens
1 has 2 stories that are about 4 x 4 each and 1 is about 3' high in height the other is about 5' high
and the other pen is 4.5' x 8' x 6 high
How big should my last coop be
I also have 22 rhode island reds that I was hoping to house in a
12 x 12 shed and free range??
do I have enough space provided for them?
by my calcs that is enough currently for 17 chickens if there is a total of 68 sf (16 + 16 + 36)
so I need another 108 sf or 10 x 12 x maybe 5 feet high

Right now, there is no run, but it is in the planning process for Spring. I just need to work on the dimensions and the placement. Thanks a lot.
