How many chickens?

Hi! I am new to chickens, but REALLY want to get some. I probably won't get them until next year, but I figured planning now isn't a bad idea. I have 500 sq feet of space for my chickens, and was wondering how many chickens could live there permanently? And can I put 4 chickens in a 4 x 5 coop? THANKS!!

There is a lot of great information here and its sorta fun to look it up. General rule they say is 4sq ft in the coop / chicken and 10sq ft in the run / chicken. I don't remember what it is if you want bantams. Good luck.
